DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to welcome Susan Birch\, a PhD* student from the University of Winchester. Susan’s talk will comprise her research into women’s healthcare and in particular the work of Lucy Baldwin\, mainly known through the work of her husband\, the Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin. She was\, however\, greatly involved in women’s health. This talk will examine her activism as Vice President of the National Birthday Trust Fund which campaigned to support maternal healthcare and explore her work in London as well as locally in Worcestershire. If you are interested in healthcare\, education\, women’s activism or the history of Worcestershire then this talk is for you! \n*Susan’s PhD focuses on 1945 to 1955 and the differing experiences of women in Birmingham and Winchester in a pre-pill era. \nDonations to the museum appreciated. \nBooking is essential! SUMMARY:Saturday afternoon talk - Mapping History
DESCRIPTION:Come and listen to Clive Foreman deliver his Mapping History talk on another of our Saturday afternoon series of talks. Clive has been researching the roads\, rails and waterways of Worcester since moving to the city in the early 2000s. Previous to that\, Clive was a member of the Board of Directors of the Faversham Society\, in Kent\, a Civic Society\, with the objective of preserving and improving local heritage\, ranging from town planning\, research and education\, including maintaining three museums based in heritage premises. The main museum\, called the Fleur de Lis\, after a former pub which forms its core\, was expanded and re-designed during the period 1996 to 2000; Clive was responsible for designing and managing the creation of galleries dealing with history up to 1538 (the Dissolution of Faversham Abbey) and with the development of local education\, beginning in Tudor times. During the period 2000 to 2019\, at which point Clive and his wife Jean moved to Worcester\, he organised annual exhibitions with the title Into the Light\, displaying items from the collection which are not normally on show. During the years 2014-2019 these were augmented by exhibitions covering the effect of WW1 on Faversham. In 2015 the 800th anniversary of Magna Carta was celebrated with a travelling exhibition featuring 17 Royal Charters owned by Faversham Town Council\, including a copy of Magna Carta purchased by them in the year 1300. Clive was responsible for the content of the displays. The exhibition was displayed in the major towns and cities of Kent\, including Rochester and Canterbury cathedrals. \n(see www.magnacartarediscovered.com). \nThis a free event but we appreciate donations to the museum.

Linda is researching Worcester’s cinemas and she’ll be telling us all about the many fascinating secrets she’s uncovered about ‘going to the pictures’ in our lovely city. Plus\, she’s really keen to hear from you\, too! Do you have memories of going to the cinema in Worcester? Or perhaps you or someone you know worked there? There’ll be an opportunity to share your reminisces\, so do come along. \nThe talk is free to attend and will run from 2pm to 3pm on Saturday 26 March. SUMMARY:Hidden Histories of Tudor House
DESCRIPTION:You might think you know all the secrets of our lovely building already\, but we’ve a few tricks up our sleeve still. Come and hear about the lives of those who lived in Tudor House\, whose stories we don’t tell in our displays! Go deeper into our history and learn about everything from the resident who entertained Queen Elizabeth I to the families who lived and worked here in the nineteenth century. \nWe are running a special ‘Talk and Tour’ telling these stories in early 2022 at £6.50 per person. Each tour lasts approximately an hour\, and the price includes tea and cake in our lovely coffee shop at the end! Pre-booking is essential and places are limited. Book via Eventbrite\, and pay on the day. \nThe tour will explore the first floor of our lovely timber-framed building. Sadly\, we do not have lift access to this area of the museum. For this reason\, we are offering a seated version of the talk on Wednesday 16 March in our ground floor coffee shop (wheelchair accessible). We’ll go on a whistle-stop tour of the festive season through the centuries\, from the Tudor times to the Second World War. From stuffed boars’ heads to Christmas dinner on the ration\, we’ve got it all covered. \nThere’s only two opportunities to join us for the talk: Saturday 27 November and Saturday 11 December (2 to 3pm both occasions). Spaces are limited so please book via Eventbrite or email info@tudorhouse.org.uk \nPlease note that this event has proven very popular and the two date have now sold out! We’ve added a third date – 11 December at 11am – but if you’d like to be added to the waiting list for the afternoon talks please do get in touch at the above address. DESCRIPTION:As part of our exciting pop up exhibition Evacuee Stories we’re delighted that our volunteer\, Alec\, will be joining us for a very special afternoon. Alec was evacuated to Devon from London during the war\, and has lots of memorable tales from his time as an evacuee. Throughout the month\, you’ll be able to watch the film we made about his experiences as part of the exhibition. But for one very special afternoon\, Alec will also be here in person. You can ask him anything about what it was like to be evacuated! \nAlec will be here from 11am to 3pm on Saturday 25th September. The exhibition is free to visit\, but we do welcome all donations.

DESCRIPTION:Journalist and author John Phillpott will be at the Tudor House Museum\, Worcester\, on Saturday\, July 14\, to publicise his new book\, Beef Cubes and Burdock: Memories of a 1950s Country Childhood. \nIt describes a time when farm labourers lived in tied cottages now occupied by young professionals… an era when children played safely on streets\, an era in which the farm life would slowly give way to something more urban. These were the days when there was a village shop\, pub\, off licence\, post office and school \nThe book is a collection of stories from the days of his boyhood growing up in the village of Churchover\, near Rugby\, north Warwickshire. After leaving school\, John worked as a trainee reporter at the age of 16. Since then\, he has worked on numerous regional newspapers during a career spanning nearly five decades. \nHis fascination with family history has led to him uncovering a number of interesting stories following extensive research into the lives of ancestors. These include a forebear with the same name who was the co-assassin of Peasants’ Revolt leader Wat Tyler in 1381 and another namesake who was burned at the stake for heresy in 1555. \nJohn said: “The rural landscape that I knew back in the 1950s has changed irrevocably over the last half century. The M6 cut through the parish in the late 1960s\, and the inevitable development soon followed\, urbanising what had hitherto been rolling farmland. The book is both a lament and a celebration of a vanished rural idyll. It also serves as warning that when we cover countryside with concrete and tarmac it is lost forever.” \nJohn will be at the Tudor House Museum in Friar Street between 10am and 2pm on the day.
