Bedfellows Embroidery Project

The Bedfellows project began in 2019.  A counterpane and curtains were created for our replica Tudor tester bed which sits in our Best Room, beneath the beautiful Tudor embossed plaster ceiling.  The design was inspired by Tudor textiles, the motifs you see on our ceiling, and includes decorative elements that have relevance to the period and 16th century Worcester.  The design, stitches and techniques reference textiles which would have been created for an interior, such as the bed chamber at Tudor House 500 years ago.  This project was completed in 2024 when we revealed the finished work in the Best Room. The Bedfellows project was funded with a generous £18,000 National Lottery grant from Arts Council England and £1000 from Elmley Small Grants.

Led by the designer and Principal Artist, Debbie Conyers a team of volunteers recreated Tudor-style curtains and counterpane for our four-poster bed. Using traditional stitching techniques, the finished items are full of flowers, animals and fantastical creatures. A design to catch the eye!
